UEFA Punishes CSKA, Part Of Arena Khimki To Be Closed In Their Next Champions League Home Game

European football governing body UEFA has ordered CSKA Moscow to have part of their Arena Khimki Stadium (sector D) closed during the club’s next Champions League home fixture. This comes as a punishment for the Russian champions for the racist behaviour of their fans during October 23 Champions League match against Manchester City. Ivory Coast international, Yaya Toure, complained of racist abuse inside the Moscow stadium during the Group D encounter, adding that he notified Romanian referee, Ovidou Hategan, who officiated the encounter, about a ‘Monkey Chant’ by a section of the fans.
UEFA pushed through new anti-racism proposals earlier this year which highlights the body’s zero tolerance on racism. A UEFA statement concerning racism and its punishment read: “The fight against racism is a high priority for UEFA”. “All forms of racist behaviour are considered serious offences against the disciplinary regulations and are punished with the most severe sanctions.” It introduced a measure whereby if supporters were found guilty then there would be partial closure of the stadium. If there is a second offence by the club’s supporters there will be full closure with a minimum of 50,000 euros (£ 42,700) fine. “Under the regulations, a second offence of racial abuse concerning spectators could result in a full stadium closure,” the UEFA statement on racism added. Meanwhile referee Hategan was absolved of blame by UEFA followi ng accusations he may not have followed the correct procedure. A UEFA spokeman told BBC Sport the referee, after being informed by Toure of allegations regarding racist abuse, passed the message to the 4th official who then informed the venue director, a UEFA appointment, who could have then made an announcement to the crowd. The venue director claimed he hadn’t heard anything from the crowd and failed to read an announcement. UEFA says the man has now been relieved of his duties.

Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure says arch-rivals Manchester United are ‘really struggling’ to retain their title

The Red Devils swept to the Premier League crown in 2012/13, offering the perfect send-off to outgoing boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
A changing of the guard at Old Trafford has not run smoothly, though, with new manager David Moyes enduring a baptism of fire.
There have been signs in recent outings that the tide is turning, but a slow start has left the defending champions eight points off the pace.
Toure feels United will find it difficult to bridge that gap, with Liverpool considered to be a greater threat to the usual suspects in the battle for top flight supremacy.
He said in The Sun: “United will find it hard to defend the title since they have a new manager and are really struggling.

“Liverpool are a big threat at the moment because they have a strong squad and their strikers – Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge – are scoring goals at will.”
City ended their latest outing empty-handed, leaving them just two points better off than United and with goalkeeper Joe Hart coming in for renewed criticism.
The England man endured an afternoon to forget during a 2-1 defeat at Chelsea on Sunday, but Toure is convinced he remains the right man to provide City’s last line of defence.
He added: “Joe is a top keeper who gives his all to the team.”

Rapper 50 Cent Gets Probation In Domestic Violence Case

50-cent-

If Chris Brown can get away then 50 Cent should be allowed to walk free too.
G-Unit gang leader, rapper 50 Cent on Monday was all smiles as the Los Angeles prosecutors granted his appeal and gave him a lesser sentence of three years’ probation and 30 days of community service after allegedly kicking the mother of his child and destroying her property during a June altercation.
The 38-year-old rapper, Curtis Jackson, pleaded no contest to a single count of misdemeanor vandalism while three vandalism counts and one count of misdemeanor domestic violence were dropped, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Superior Court said.

The Grammy winner was accused of kicking open a door at the condominium of his former girlfriend, model Daphne Narvaez, who is also known as Daphne Joy, in the Toluca Lake community of Los Angeles, kicking her and destroying a piece of furniture, chandelier and television.
50 Cent also has to pay $7,100 in restitution and $2,390 in fines.
50 Cent’s attorney, Scott Leemon, also said the “In da Club” rapper will also attend counseling sessions.
In August, 50 Cent, who could have faced a maximum penalty of five years in jail and $46,000 if convicted on all counts, pleaded not guilty to the five counts before agreeing to the plea deal.

PRESIDENT JONATHAN TO MEET ASUU ON MONDAY, NOVEMBER 4

President Goodluck Jonathan will on Monday, November 4, meet with the leadership of ASUU at the Presidential Villa.

This was part of the resolutions of the meeting between the ASUU leadership, Vice President Namadi Sambo and the Supervising Minister of Education on Tuesday as was first reported by this medium.

An official of the Vice President's office who pleaded anonymity told Scan News that all hands are now on deck to ensure that the universities resume next week.

The official stated that the Vice President and the Supervising Minister of Education have made head-way in resolving the strike, but the final involvement of the President is to show ASUU that there is the commitment of the Federal Government at the highest level.

It was learnt that the President has been fully briefed on steps taken by Vice President Namadi Sambo and the Supervising Minister of Education to get to this point. It was learnt that the President will at next Monday's meeting present to the ASUU leadership the administration's last concession for them to call off the prolonged strike.

A source at the Presidential Villa noted that if ASUU fails to call off, the Federal Government will then resort to plan B, which will be to compulsorily open the universities, using the instrumentality of the governing councils and the school managements.

Already, most of the governing councils of the universities have started meeting to work out modalities for the compulsory re-opening of the universities should ASUU fail to honour the personal request of President Jonathan.

Scan News gathered that the Supervising Minister of Education, Barr. Nyesom Wike and the Vice Chancellors of Public Universities also discussed the re-opening of the schools last Monday. Most of the Vice Chancellors suggested the compulsory re-opening of the schools, should the last ditch efforts fail.

It was gathered that security report available to the Presidency may have necessitated this line of action to salvage the universities system from the direction it is facing at present.

Tiwa Savage, Peter Okoye To Wed In November

November must be the new month of love as two of Nigeria’s most notable celebrity couples are prepping up to be joined in holy matrimony.

Delectable singer Tiwa Savage is getting married to her manager-fiance Tunji ‘T-Billz’ Balogun; so is Peter Okoye, one half the famous duo, Psquare who’s warming to tie the knot with his longtime girlfriend and baby-mama, Lola Omotayo.

While the First Lady of Mavin Records and her beau picked November 23, 2013 as their wedding date, Peter and Lola will be moving on with their November 17, 2013 date to have their traditional marriage.
Last week, an excited Tiwa and her soon-to-be hubby travelled out to the UK shopping for some wedding items. ‘It is happening in November and here in Lagos. I have to follow due protocols before I can disclose further information’, one of the couple’s aides reveals. Tiwa and T-Billz are expected back in Lagos on Tuesday (October 29, 2013).
It was also revealed that the traditional marriage will be followed by a white wedding ceremony which is expected to hold in early 2014 in TheMaldives an island off the coast of the Indian Ocean. Tiwa reportedly visited the island in August, probably to make wedding arrangements.

‘It is nice to finally see these two taking the next step in their relationship. They have been through a lot together’ a source close to the couple said. In what started as a rumour and several denials, Tiwa and T-Billz’s relationship suddenly took a dramatic twist when he formally proposed on Tiwa’s 34th birthday on February 5, 2013.
On their part, Peter and Lola have been quite open with their wedding plans. The November traditional wedding will take place at the Arc Events Centre in Lekki, Lagos. Comedian Gbenga Adeyinka 1st and TV host Helen Paul have been selected to anchor the event.
On August 6, 2013, Peter proposed to Lola in grand style, presenting her with a brand new Range Rover Evoque, bouquet of flowers and a stunning diamond ring. Together, the couple have two children, four year old Cameron and nine months old Aliona. A surprise bachelorette party was held on Saturday October 26 for Lola, attended by close friends.
Arrangements are said to be in top gear as Peter is leaving no stone unturned to make the day an unforgettable one. ‘Peter plans to make the wedding as memorable as possible to please the woman who stood by him all these years’, a source said. Both couples are planning big for their days which leaves one to wonder if either of these November weddings will match up to the widely publicised and expensive Dubai wedding of 2face and Annie held earlier this year.

HOW TO FIND IMEI NUMBER OFYOUR STOLEN / LOST ANDROIDPHONE

After buying a new mobile phone be it
nokia, blackberry, android, iphone, it is expected of us to write down the IMEI number to serve as means of claiming ownership of the phone should in case it got stolen or lost.so
many of us fail to do that and as a result of that, would not be able to
claim or block such phone if found.

However Today i am going to share with you on how to find the IMEI number of your lost/stolen android phone.

Remember google is the owner of android OS and such requires one to
use their gmail account to fully install and synchronize the android
packages such as phone details, network etc. with this you can easily get your IMEI if the phone was stolen or lost. this is why i always encourage my fans to create a new gmail account for their
android phones. Its never a good idea to use your private gmail to install or
synchronize when you bought new android phone like samsung galaxy, techno N3, N7, F7, htc, Sony experia etc because when the phone is stolen or lost, that means you have
automatically give the person access to your private email to control, guess you wouldn't want that to happen.

PROCEDURES TO FIND THE IMEI OF YOUR ANDROID PHONES

1. Visit gmail.com on your computer and login using the email you used to
install your android phone when you first bought it.when you are logged in, click on account at the left top corner of the page and then click on dashboard or you can just go directly using this link dashboard settings.

2. From the dashboard, you will see ANDROID, click on it, it will display all the device you have attached to the email and the IMEI number.

you can then write it down some where for reference purpose. that's
all.

Hope its helpful??

FG,ASUU AGREED TO END STRIKE

Indication emerged on Tuesday that the Federal Government and Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may have agreed to end their face-off.
The meeting between the Supervising Minister of Education, Mr Nyesom Wike and ASUU, led by its president, Dr Nasir Isa Fagge, held behind closed-door, was said to be productive.
Both parties came out from the meeting beaming with smiles, an indication that some compromises had been made, though they refused to speak with journalists.
Nigerian Tribune, however, gathered that ASUU had presented its position on some of the grey areas in the agreement to the minister.
While the minister was to convey this to President Goodluck Jonathan for approval, ASUU was to convene its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, where decision on suspension of the about four-month-old strike would be decided.
Sources also told the Nigerian Tribune that the minister had already briefed the vice chancellors on the implementation of some of the issues agreed upon

VC Explains Why Nigerian Graduates Are Unemployable

The Vice Chancellor, Federal University of Technology, Akure, Prof. Biyi Daramola, says Nigerian graduates are unemployable due to the lack of self discipline and commitment to vigorous academic pursuit.

Daramola said this in a lecture entitled; ”The Role of Science and Technology in Human Resource Management”, he presented at the Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, on Thursday.

He spoke at a forum organised by the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria.
The Professor of Agricultural Economics said it was regrettable that many Nigerian graduates could not secure jobs after years of applications.
He said that the lack of exposure to science and Technology was also a major factor responsible for their plight.

The vice chancellor said it was high time the country’s education curricula be fashioned in a manner to make mathematics compulsory for all courses at all levels.

This, he said, would boost students’ interests in science and technology from their tender ages.
Daramola urged governments to ensure proper funding of science and technology at all levels of the academic cadre, adding that “they should also help in the establishment of monotechnics and polytechnics or universities of technology that would expose students to skills acquisition.

“Over the years, Nigerian education policies have recognised the importance of science-based courses in the nation’s education curricular and thus pursued the policy of giving more attention to science-oriented courses during admissions into the nation’s tertiary institutions.”

He said that the empahasis on science and technology would facilitate the actualisation of the country’s desire to join the comity of developed economies by the year 2020.

In her remarks, the Ekiti State Deputy Governor, Prof Modupe Adelabu, who was represented by the Commissioner for Education, Mr Kehinde Ojo, said the distributions of 48,000 laptops to students and teachers, as well as renovation of all schools by Gov. Kayode Fayemi-led administration underscored the importance placed on education.

The President/Chairman of Council, Mr. Victor Famuyibo, who was represented by the Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of the Institution, Mr Sunday Adeyemi, pledged that the council would continue to live up to expectations in its commitment to the management of human capital for maximum productivity. ASUU Strike: Idle Students Take Up Menial Jobs In Kaduna

Some undergraduates in Kaduna have ventured into various vocations to keep them occupied as the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) persists, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

Some of them who spoke with NAN on Friday in Kaduna said that they had to find something to do, to keep their minds occupied and avoid trouble.

Grace Ocholi, a 300-level student of English at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, said she secured a temporary job as a fuel pump attendant at a petrol station in Sabon-Tasha area of the city to enable her earn some money until the end of the strike.

“Everyone in my house go out every morning to work, and my younger sisters go to school while I stay home and sleep awaiting for their return.

“I am not okay with staying idle so I decided to engage in something useful,” Grace said.
Seun Ali, an HND Computer Science student of Kaduna Polytechnic told NAN that he worked at a friend’s barbing saloon to earn some money instead of staying idle at home.

Another student, Henry Samuel of Mass Communication Department, Ahmadu Bello University, said he was assisting his father in selling tiles before he was admitted to the university.

Samuel said he had to continue manning the business until the end of the lecturers’ strike.
“So instead of wasting time waiting for the prolonged strike to end, I returned to continue from where I stopped,” he said.

The students advised their colleagues to engage in something meaningful while the strike lasted, so as not to fall into the temptation of going into crime due to idleness.

NAN recalls that ASUU had been on strike since June over the non-implementation of a 2009 agreement it entered with the Federal Government on the funding of public universities. (NAN)

WITH BLACKBERRY OUT OF THE RUNNING, WHO WILL EVENTUALLY DOMINATE?

WITH BLACKBERRY OUT OF THE RUNNING, WHO WILL EVENTUALLY DOMINATE?

Once upon a time, Blackberry was one of the leading handset providers throughout the world. They were known for being a social device with BBM and great for business professionals. Since then it has been a downward spiral for the company and 2013 seems to be the year that they have finally accepted defeat. So with Blackberry out of the running, which company will eventually dominate the mobile market?

COULD IT BE APPLE?
With this years release of two new iPhones, Apple does not seem to be slowing down in a bid to dominate.

HOW ABOUT SAMSUNG?
With the Galaxy S4 receiving great reviews, as well as the Note 3, Samsung definitely seem to be upping their game in terms of quality and performance.

MAYBE HTC?
Although HTC is a company that has been around for years, However, although models such as the HTC One have received a large amount of attention

WILL NOKIA BE THE ONE?
As with Samsung, Nokia has always been a fairly constant provider within the mobile market.

In conclusion
So to summarize, Nokia have never particularly been in the running and HTC are now running out of steam. This leaves the two big guys Apple and Samsung left in the ring. But who will make it to the top? At the minute it looks 50/50 as Apple have released new models to tackle Samsungs S4, but how long that will hold up, only time will tell.

TAMBUWAL SAYS HOUSE WILL APPROVE MONEY TO END ASUU STRIKE

House of Rep Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal, has said if there is a need to make extra budgetary provisions for the Federal Government to resolve the lingering face-off between it and the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU), the House would do so.

Let me use this opportunity to appeal to both the Executive arm and the authorities of ASUU to quickly resolve the problem. If there is need for any appropriation, the House will expeditiously assent to it in the interest of our students and the nation.

The Speaker spoke in Abuja when he received a briefing on the update of the ASUU strike from the Aminu Suleiman-led House Committee on Education.

The House mandated the Education committee to investigate the face-off by highlighting the areas of conflict and proffer solutions.

Tambuwal urged all parties to consider the interest of the students and the educational future of the nation.

FUTA Students Win 2013 ISPON National Software Cup

Oladapo Oluwadora Glory, Aboluwarin Olaluwa David and Banjo Mofesola Paul of the Federal University of Technology FUTA , Akure have won ISPON software cup 2013, they were among the 70 students from the Nigerian higher educational institutions that competed in the 2013 Institute of Software Practitioners of Nigeria, ISPON national software conference and competition holding in Tinapa Business Resort, Calabar, Cross Rivers to win Software Innovation price.

Vanguard checks revealed that twenty one schools including Usman Danfodiyo, Federal University of Technology, Akure, Federal University of Technology, Owerri, University of Benin, Delta State University, Anambra State University, uli, Federal Polytechnic, Okoh, Niger Delta University, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Uyo City University, Covernany University, Ajayi Crowther University, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife among others are participating in the national software contest hosted by the Cross Rivers State government for three years running.

However, 24 teams in different categories including mobile app, web app, desktop app, and mobile game battled to win software innovation price sponsored by Main One, Nigerian Communications Commission, NEXIM Bank, NITDA among others.

At the event that attracted key industry stakeholders and university Vice Chancellors, participants among other things discussed how best software strategies can help retool the workforce. Earlier in his opening speech on Monday, the Governor of the Cross Rivers, Senator Liyel Imoke said with optimism that future belongs to the competing students.

According to him, there was need to review Nigerian educational curriculum to match global standard.
While urging the students to use the tools and knowledge in their hands to contribute to the economic development of the country, he said that Cross Rivers State was well positioned for IT hub in Nigeria.

“How the winners will contribute to local economy is the next challenge. In this conference, we have the future of the country. We have the capacity. We can drive knowledge economy with right policies. The students in the software competition here are entrepreneurs of the future. Your destiny lies in your hands” he said.

For the ISPON President, Chris Uwaje, unless the workforce were retooled with local software, the challenge of the knowledge society may not be resolved.

According to him, there was need to retool the workforce with innovative sofTware strategies for national survivability.

ASUU strike: At last Senate Pass Resolution To End Asuu Strike

Mandates Mark to lead negotiation team

Senate yesterday passed a resolution asking Senate President David Mark to engage President Goodluck Jonathan and officials of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to end the four months strike that has shut Nigerian universities since July.

Senate also appealed to the striking university lecturers to suspend the industrial action to allow room for negotiations, in order to resolve the stalemate.

Senate resolution to empower Mark to lead the negotiation team with government and ASUU was based on a motion sponsored by a record 108 members, who fervently appealed to ASUU to call off the strike.

After an exhaustive debate of the motion, during which senators agreed that the agreement ASUU signed with government in 2009 was not implementable because of the cost implication, directed its committee on education to liaise with the Ministry of Education, National Universities Commission (NUC), ASUU and other stakeholders on how to proffer solutions and stem further strikes.

Mark blamed government officials, who represented government to sign the agreement with ASUU. His words: “It showed the level of people the executive sends to go and negotiate with ASUU.

“The Federal Government should call those it sent to sign the agreement because it was obvious those sent did not know their right from their left and ASUU took advantage of that to sign the agreement. It is obvious that it would be difficult to implement the agreement.”

Mark also took a swipe at the acting Minister of Education, Nysom Wike, for saying that the strike would soon come to an end in a few months, adding: “The statement of the minister was totally uncalled for and insensitive to the situation on ground.”

He, however, pleaded with ASUU to shift grounds on its demands and noted: “There is no winner and no loser as long as the strike continues and nobody will win; all of us will lose.”

Earlier, Senate Education Committee Chairman, Uche Chukwumerije, in the motion informed his colleagues that the major demands of ASUU, as contained in the agreement, included payment of post-graduate allowance; teaching practice and industrial training allowances and honorarium.

Other allowances being demanded by the striking lecturers were post-graduate grants; external excess workload allowances; housing allowance; sabbatical allowance; sick leave allowance; injury allowance; provision of office accommodation; car allowance and funding of universities.

Senator Olusola Adeyeye, who is also a former lecturer, kicked against the demands of ASUU and explained that majority of the allowances being demanded were frivolous and not applicable anywhere in the world.

He said the economy of the country could not support the number of universities currently in operation and advocated for the introduction of education tax for all workers to fund education, adding: “But we must not allow the money to be consumed by bureaucracy.”

ASUU Strike Would End In Few Days Not Months If FG Respond -Lecturers

The Education Minister, Mr. Wike said Tuesday that the face-off between the Federal Government and ASUU would be resolved in few months.

Reacting, however, ASUU leaders argued that the strike could end in next few days and not months if only the Federal Government had the political will to implement the 2009 agreement it made with the union.

Stakeholders in the education sector, yesterday, took the supervising Minister of Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike to task over his declaration that the on-going strike by Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, would be called off in a few months.

The Senate on its part appealed to ASUU to call off the strike, blaming government negotiators for being ignorant by signing an agreement that could not be implemented.

Similarly, Committee of Vice Chancellors and Registrars of private Universities in Nigeria said it had commenced moves to wade into the face-off with a view to ending the strike.

Mr. Wike said Tuesday that the face-off between the Federal Government and ASUU would be resolved in few months.

Reacting, however, ASUU leaders argued that the strike could end in next few days and not months if only the Federal Government had the political will to implement the 2009 agreement it made with the union.

The Chairman of ASUU Chapter of the Niger Delta University, Dr. Beke Sese said “We were surprised when we heard the comment, because we believe that the strike can end in 24 or 48 hours if the government has the political will to do it.

“It is not that we want the strike to go on much longer, but the issues on ground are more pertinent than days or weeks.”

Dr. Adesola Nassir, the chairman ASUU, Ibadan zone said the only way the minister’s assertion could hold water was if the Federal Government was ready to honour the agreement it had with the union in 2009.

Nassir said: “My only guess is that the supervising Minister of education and the Federal Government must be ready to do what is right and implement the 2009 agreement, because that is the only solution to bring an end to the strike.

“All we have seen from the government in our different meetings is begging; government begging us to keep patching up the education sector so we can continue to churn out half-baked graduates as a result of lack of infrastructure.

AAUA ASUU, Police clash over plan to abort protest rally

The Academic Staff Union of Universities [ASUU], Adekunle Ajasin University (AAU) Akungba-Akoko and the Police in Ondo state are at loggerheads over a protest scheduled to hold tomorrow in Akungba by the University lecturers over the ongoing ASUU strike.

DailyPost learnt that a detachment of anti-riot policemen had been drafted to strategic points in the town and the main gate of the University to disrupt the protest.

Besides, an Armoured Personnel Carriers [APC] has been reportedly stationed at the AAU gate to ensure that the rally does not hold as scheduled.

But ASUU Chairman, Mr Busuyi Mekusi has declared that the protest rally must hold despite the invasion of the University community by the police.

He stressed that they had on October 14, wrote a letter to the Police Commissioner, informing him of the planned protest ,but got no response.

Police Spokesman,Wole Ogodo said the rally was illegal, stressing that the development could lead to breakdown of law and order.

A statement issued in Akure, the state capital by counsel to the ASUU, Titiloye Charles, condemned the ”undemocratic” use of Police Force by the Federal Government to restrict and prevent street rallies organised by the Union to sensitize Nigerians on the need to support the struggle in order to revamp public Universities in Nigeria.

He noted that While Federal Government actively provided security protection for Anti-ASUU protesters nationwide, it had given instruction to Police formation nationwide to stop ASUU from holding public rallies.

Titiloye noted with great concern the threat issued by Divisional Police officer of Nigerian Police Force, Akungba Akoko to use force to deal decisively with ASUU members if they hold any rally within or outside the University campus today.

He observed that ASUU’s letter to the Commissioner of Police was not to obtain permission from the Police for the Union to exercise their fundamental human rights to associate and assemble, but to ask the Police to provide its members the needed Security during the protest.

The Lawyer said the CP was yet to reply the letter, and the DPO of Akungba was threatening fire and brimstone should ASUU hold its rally on Thursday.

The Activist noted that even in the tyrannical days of Military regime in Nigeria, such threat of police violence was not issued against ASUU members.

The Union called on President Jonathan to allow it mobilize Nigerians and create a space for public debate on its demand, and not to create the impression that Nigerians are against ASUU.

ASUU STRIKE: Ezeife begs union to have a rethink

The former governor of old Anambra State, Dr. Chukwumeka Ezeife, has appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to end its protracted strike in order to save the nation’s education sector from collapsing.

Ezeife, who is the current chairman, Board of Trustees, National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), made the appeal at the inaugural meeting of the board in Abuja.

Speaking on the ongoing strike by the university lecturers, Ezeife said, “Let me use this opportunity to plead with the leadership of ASUU to direct their members back to classes. We understand the many provocations of the Nigerian system, the unfair plunder of the national treasury by the few political operators of the system, the monumental corruption, the conspicuous consumption and squandamania by people who could not have seen the backs of the members of ASSU at school.

“But leaders of ASUU, members of ASUU, think, ruminate and find in kindness of heart, if no reason, to call off the strike. It is about four months now. Please call it off for the sake of the students, some of them are your children.

“Take a look at what is happening to your own children at home and out of school. I chaired a meeting of Southern Nigerian Students Association at Enugu on Saturday, 13th October 2013. The pronouncements of the student showed great hostility to ASSU and the hostility is growing.

“The rank of those implying political motive is growing and it is becoming more difficult for ASUU’s friends to controvert and defend. Please call this strike off for the sake of sustaining the freedom of association and the right to go on strike. ”We are beginning to look unpatriotic, un-parent-like, destructive, damaging in the extreme,” he further stated.

He also appealed to the Federal Government not to rigidly apply the no-work-no-pay rule.

He also promised on behalf of the board to improve on primary and secondary education in the country through enhancement in the quality of teachers.

He said the board members and the management of NCCE had resolved to initiate a no-strike system in at least the federal colleges of education.

“This is achievable, but not by intimidation, deaf ear, disdain or bluff by either party. It calls for effective channels of communication, continuing dialogue, vigilant anticipation and pro-activeness,” he added.

The present strike may last up to 5 years if FG remains adamant - ASUU

ASUU protests hit Ile-Ife, Calabar, Osogbo, Ibadan.

From seminar halls and boardrooms where talks seem to have collapsed, university teachers have moved their battle for better education to the streets.

But, the police are stopping them from holding rallies and marches to convince the public that their four-month old action is right.

In Calabar, the police yesterday stopped a planned protest by lecturers of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) and the Cross River University.

But the lecturers addressed a rally on the UNICAL campus.

University of Ibadan (UI) lecturers had a town hall meeting to sensitise the people to the strike.

In Ile-Ife, Osun State, Obafemi Awolowo University lecturers marched on the streets, getting to the palace of the Ooni of Ife. They urged him to pravail on the government to implement the 2009 agreement it signed with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), without which the strike would continue.

President Goodluck Jonathan said during last month’s Presidential Chat that the government cannot fully implement the agreement, especially the financial aspect, because doing so would force a shutdown of other departments.

The Nigeria Labour Congrees (NLC), also yesterday, said although it would not call out workers on a solidarity strike with the lecturers, it would hold a meeting in Kaduna tomorrow to take a stand on the way forward.

No fewer than 200 policemen, most of them heavily armed, stopped ASUU members from carrying out an enlightenment walk in Calabar.

The walk, which was organised by the UNICAL and Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH) branches of ASUU, was to take off from the UNICAL gate at 7am and go through some streets of Calabar, but the policemen ensured the teachers did not leave the campus

The policemen said they were acting on “orders from above”.

ASUU Chairman Dr James Okpiliya said: “Our union is law abiding. We wrote to the police and other security agencies on our intention of walking the streets in pursuance of our cause to put the records straight.

“Many groups have been walking the streets, giving people the wrong impression about the situation. We just want to put the records straight. The police are telling us that they have orders from above not to let us walk the streets of Calabar. It is a shame. You can all see the hypocrisy of government.

“They allowed youth and market women but they would not let us academics, peace loving people. We would remain resolute. No amount of provocation would stop us.”

Okpiliya went on: “We are not on strike because of our salaries. We are fighting for our students and the terrible conditions of our university. Most of our science students do not know the difference between Bunsen burner and a stove. They don’t even know the chemicals.

“The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) today has become a main funding source of our universities, but this is not to be so. TETFUND is only an intervention agency. Government has bailed out banks and even Nollywood, but not our universities.

“The strike would continue as long as the government remains adamant. The President said after all, the strike in Ghana lasted two years, so that means this one can continue even up to five years.

“It is a shame for the President to say the strike is political. The strike is not political. We are fighting for the good of our people. If there is anything political about this it is by him Jonathan. Let him implement the agreement and if the strike continues then he can say it is political. Any government that does not pay attention to the education sector is a dead government.”

The Chairman of ASUU, CRUTECH branch, Dr Nsing Ogar, said the Federal Government must honour the agreement.

A former president of ASUU and renowned author, Prof Festus Iyayi, said a government that does not respect agreements is calling for anarchy.

He said: “This is the final struggle. Even if it takes 10 years, the students should know we are struggling on their behalf. A day would come when the police would join us. A day would come when we would not care whether the police would stop or not. The state has failed.”

Another lecturer from UNICAL said: “If the strike is called off today, everybody will be worse off for it. People are not looking at the issues; they are just saying open the school, let the children graduate. Let them go to school. They are not bothered about the quality of education they are getting. In the future, whatever we say the government will never take us seriously.”

OAU chapter Chairman Prof. Peter Akinola, who led the protest, urged the Federal Government to accede to ASUU’s demands to enable the union suspend the industrial action.

Addressing residents at the palace of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, Akinola said the education sector deserved a better deal.

A member of the union, Prof. Gbolahan Babalola, said protest was to show the concern of ASUU for undergraduates who had stayed at home for months.

He urged traditional rulers and other stakeholders to resolve the impasse.

The Sarun Oodua, Chief Adekola Adeyeye, who represented the Ooni, praised ASUU for the peaceful conduct and show of concern for students.

Adeyeye said that the Ooni understood that education was the best legacy that any parent or government could bequeath to any child.

He promised that the union’s message would be relayed to the traditional ruler.

The OAU lecturers moved round major streets of Ile-Ife. Osun State University teachers staged their rally at the newly built Freedom Square near Old Garage in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.

The Ile-Ife rally, which kicked off from the Oduduwa Hall of the OAU caused a traffic gridlock for many hours in the ancient town.

Osun State University branch Chairman Dr. Joseph Abiona was worried over the misinformation being dished out to Nigerians by the Federal Government as reason for the strike.

The NLC said it was in the process of mediating between the Federal Government and ASUU.

Oyo State NLC Chairman Comrade Bashiru Olarewaju spoke at a town hall meeting organised by ASUU to review the strike. The meeting was held at the Trenchard Hall of the University of Ibadan (UI).

At the Town Hall meeting were hundreds of people, including civil society groups’ members, politicians, the clergy, traders who were presented with slide of the NEEDS ASSESSMENT REPORT of 2009 .

The NLC, according to Olarewaju , will meet tomorrow in Kaduna to take a decisive action on the ASUU strike.

He said: “The government and some other people have been trying to undermine the power, the influence and the ability of each group that can salvage this nation from collapse . And let me say this, that NLC has not been quiet. No, many people will want the NLC to go on strike. No; we will not go on strike on ASUU for now. But, anything can happen after Wednesday. This is because we have more than 40 affiliates. If an affiliate of NLC is in crisis and we now bring the entire workforce to join the strike, the train of the nation will not move forward. What we do in most cases is to mediate. ASUU is an affiliate of the NLC. ASUU is our partner. We will work together ,” the NLC chair said.

Prof. Remi Raji, Dean, Faculty of Arts, UI, said: “The way forward is for the government to look at the NEEDS ASSESSMENT report, which was presented to the government in November, 2012.

“In the next few days, it will be one year and nothing has been done of the 189 recommendations and we are saying that it is very crucial for government to deal with it squarely for the future of our children and our nation because a country that does not develop its own capacity within, to develop its own education standard to world class quality, cannot claim to be a giant of Africa, cannot claim to have a clean bill of economic health . This is the issue.”

UI chapter Chairman Dr. Olusegun Ajiboye said the appeal by President Jonathan to be patriotic is not needed but action and implementation of the agreement reached with the union.

He said it was sad that a President who claimed that corruption is not Nigeria’s problem can watch a Minister buy bullet proof vehicles for N255million, yet claiming there is no money to fund education.

He berated the President for speaking out publicly on the ongoing strike close to four months after it began, maintaining that he has not been patriotic and sensitive enough to the needs of the majority of Nigerians.

He said: “Will it have been possible for Mr. President to be quiet if his children are in one of our public institutions and be at home for four months? “How many years of appeal will make Mr. President implement a four year old agreement? The truth is we are tired of appeal. We need action. “

The Chairman of ASUU, Niger Delta University (NDU), Wilberforce Island, Bayelsa State, Dr. Beke Sese, said the strike is to save the universities from collapse.

He maintained that the strike had no political undertone and not targeted at Jonathan or his administration.

Sese told reporters in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, that the industrial action was to protest the deplorable condition of public universities.

“Imputing political motive to the strike is a calculated attempt by some persons to deploy propaganda gimmicks to the cause of the university teachers, in order to divert attention from the real issues that informed the strike,” Sese said, adding:

“When the current Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, was ASUU president, the members did not compromise, when there was similar strike, during the regime of the late Gen. Sani Abacha.

“This is the first time that ASUU members have embarked on a protracted strike, which centres on funding of the universities and improvement of the infrastructure. The funds so far released by the Federal Government are grossly inadequate. The 2009 agreement must be fully implemented.”

Jonathan re-appoints Prof. Onu as Oko-poly's rector

President Goodluck Jonathan has approved the re-appointment the Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Professor Godwin Onu for another four-year term.

This was even as the Chairman, Senate Committee on Education, Senator Uche Chukwumerije, yesterday, called for the upgrading of the polytechnic, to a Federal University of Science and Technology.

This call was contained in Chukuwmerije’s congratulatory message to Prof. Onu, on his reappointment. Chukwumerije described the polytechnic as one of the fastest growing tertiary institutions in the country.

Speaking with journalists at the conference hall of the institution, Mr. Obini Onuchukwu Obini the public relations officer, said the reappointment of the rector
followed his landmark achievement in the college since assuming office.

He said Onu’s administration had since inception embarked on aggressive developmental projects in the institution as well as manpower development for both students and staff.

In a similar message, former Vice President, Alex Ekwueme said that the reappointment of Onu was a step in the right direction and asked the rector to justify the trust by putting more efforts in his vision of transforming the polytechnic.

However, Obini assured that the reappointment of the Rector for another four year term would give room for a more aggressive development of the college community but would make sure that the age long clamour for the institution to be upgraded to a federal university was actualized.

Meanwhile, the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics, SSANIP, Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, and the Student Union Government, SUG, have commended President Jonathan for the reappointment of the rector.

National President of the ASUP, Mr Chibuzor Asomugha while hailing Jonathan for the re-appointment expressed hope that Onu would justify the trust by consolidating on his earlier achievements.

Asomugha asked the rector not to rest on oars but continue to consolidate on his past achievements during his first tenure just as the Chairman of the SSANIP, George Okoye thanked God for his reappointment and expressed confidence that Onu would work harder to maintain the records already set.

Strike: It is impossible to meet ASUU’s Demands –FG

Federal Government on Tuesday repeated its call on the striking university teachers to return to work in the interest of students and prevent further damage to the education system.

Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, made the call during the ministry’s monthly press briefing in Abuja.

He said government had conceded to most of the demands made by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and wondered why the union would not budge in the interest of the nation.

“No nation can move forward if we all expect government to give 100 per cent time and effort to our problems. We run an economy that needs attention in all phases,” the minister said.

He said government’s commitment to resolve ASUU crisis was further demonstrated by its representation by Vice President Namadi Sambo in the ongoing dialogue.

Maku explained that the strike was not for salaries but for allowances, as salaries had been increased.

According to the minister, “Salaries have been increased by 54.3 per cent which is half of our monthly income but they still insist on their N100 billon allowance.

“Government offered N30 billion but after a meeting with the Vice President, government promised another N10 billion, making it N40 billion.

“Government has also promised N100 billion from Education Trust Fund and the N40 billon allowance has already been paid in many universities, yet they are still under lock and key,” he added.

The minister also stated that no government had cooperated with ASUU the way the present government was doing.

The minister, however, sympathised with students now at home and called on parents and Nigerians in general to appeal to ASUU to go back to the classrooms.

Meanwhile, placard-carrying members of ASUU, Niger Delta University (NDU) chapter, protested in Yenagoa on Tuesday, decrying the Federal Government’s refusal to implement the 2009 FGN/ASUU pact.

Police authorities in the state denied the aggrieved university teachers permission for street protest but limited them to the confines of the university’s Law Faculty in the Bayelsa State capital.

Chairman of NDU ASUU, Beke Sese, who addressed reporters, also disclosed that the Chief Security Officer (CSO) to Governor Seriake joystickson quizzed him few hours to the planned protest on Tuesday morning.

Some of the placards brandished by the lecturers carried inscriptions like, ‘Not every child can go to Ghana to study’; ‘Agreement is Agreement’; ‘Government save our universities’; ‘Poor people’s children need universities’; ‘Can your child afford to go to Ghana and Malaysia, if no then join ASUU to better our universities.’

Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC) between 1996 and 2001, Muzanli Jibril, on his part attributed the incessant strike by ASUU to deficiencies in officials appointed by government to negotiate with the unionists.

He said more often than not government enters into negotiations with ASUU officials unprepared, noting that engaging former academics who have held positions in government could have been able to foster better understanding of ASUU, its strike and strategies.

Jubril also said ASUU by its tradition has been able to link significant improvement in funding to strikes, which has translated into “one ASUU strike, one major increment.”

The ex-NUC scribe spoke at the anniversary lecture to mark NUC @ 50 + 1 in Abuja on Tuesday, where he said each industrial action by the union was hinged on funding.

“Government enters into negotiations with ASUU unprepared, if the government does its part, there would be no need for ASUU to embark on strike.

“The attitudes of successive governments have not helped matters as it has made the union to realise that it can only get what it wants by embarking on strike.

“The major problem causing the industrial actions is the ‘chronic under-funding’ of the institutions,” Jibril added.

Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA) on Tuesday also in a resolution urged the university teachers to call off their strike in the interest of the students and the nation in general.

The resolution was sequel to the consideration of a motion on the ASUU strike brought onto the floor by Majority Leader, Philip Shaibu, under Matters of Urgent Public Importance.

Chairman of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Parents Forum, Babatunde Majekodunmi, has, however, appealed to ASUU members to bring their four-month-old strike to an end in the interest of students nationwide.

Reacting to President Goodluck Jonathans call in Ado-Ekiti on Saturday on the striking lecturers to bring the lingering crisis to an end, Majekodunmi in a telephone interview with Daily Independent explained that the parents’ forum will not rest until the crisis is resolved.

He said the forum had made a lot of positive moves in talking to the lecturers to maintain truce so that students who are the major causalities of the lingering crisis can return to classrooms for academic learning.

ASUU Strike ‘ll Be Over In Few Months – Wike

The Federal Government, yesterday, assured Nigerian students that the ongoing strike by Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, would be over in a few months.

The Minister of Education, Mr Nyesom Wike stated this at the anniversary lecture of National Universities Commission, NUC, in Abuja.

The minister who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Dr. Macjohn Nwaobiala, reiterated Federal Government commitment in resolving the ongoing strike of ASUU.

Minister of State for Eduction, Barrister Esenwo
According to Wike, “The Federal Government is very concerned about the state of public tertiary institutions in the country. The Federal Government is really worried about the ongoing strike of ASUU and the strike would be resolved in a few months.”

Professor John Daniel in his paper presentation titled, ‘Turbulent and Testing Times for Global Higher Education: Lessons for Nigeria’, said “online teaching and learning is now part of the future of most universities. Nigeria should be very good at this because without embarrassing you by pressing the point, I note that your country, through 419 scams, is a world leader in the use of the internet for less desirable purposes.”

He said higher education all over the world is facing lot of challenges that included youth unemployment and the current changes in the university system.
“These are indeed turbulent times, not only for United States of America but also for much of higher education globally”, he said.

A former Executive Secretary of NUC, Professor Jubril Munzali, in his goodwill message, said the education sector for 21 years have been under funded and the significant increase in the funding of tertiary institutions were done through the struggle of ASUU.

He blamed the Federal Government lingering crisis rocking the nation’s university system.
He said it is time Federal Government listened to its agencies and allow NUC perform its statutory role and fund universities based on the advice of its agencies like NUC.

“Successive administrations in the country never paid adequate attention to university education”. He said the Federal Government process of direct funding of universities, have over the years resulted in mismanagement of the funds allocated to the institutions.

Police stop ASUU rally in Bayelsa

Meanwhile, the police authorities in Bayelsa State, yesterday, stopped the planned public protest by lecturers of the state owned Niger Delta University, NDU, Amassoma in the prolonged strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU. The police order, issued against the planned public procession by the ASUU, NDU chapter, was reportedly signed by the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hillary Okpara.

But the undaunted lecturers converged at the Yenagoa campus of the university to stage solidarity rally and also held a prayer session to seek the face of God over the lingering crisis.

ASUU STRIKE: ASUU DEMANDS N1.5TR TO END STRIKE

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Education, Senator Uche Chukwumerije, released the figure in his contribution on a motion urging the striking lecturers to call off their strike.

The motion sponsored by the Senate Leader, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, and 106 others is entitled: Appeal to Academic Staff Union of Universities to call off the strike action and return to work.
Chukwumerije, who read the controversial 2009 agreement between the Federal Government and ASUU, said that part of the component of the agreement on funding stipulated that all regular federal universities shall require the sum of N1.5 trillion for the period 2009 to 2011.

He said that ASUU is insisting that the agreement must be implemented to the latter.

He said the agreement also said that This money is to be paid in three installments, 2009  almost N500 billion; 2010  almost N500 billion and 2011  almost N506 billion.

Apart from the N1.5 trillion the agreement also stipulated that each state university shall require N3.6 million while a minimum of 26 per cent of the annual budget should be allocated to education.

According to him, the agreement also said that education should be put on First Line Charge while the Education Tax Act should be amended to its original concept as High Education Fund.

He noted that the agreement said that Governing Council of Universities should access and effectively utilize from Education Tax Fund funds for research, training and development of academic staff.

Other components of the agreement included Salary Structure of Academic Staff of Nigerian universities and earned academic staff allowances.

The earned academic staff allowances include: Post graduate supervision allowances; teaching practice and industrial allowances; honorarium for external moderation of undergraduate and postgraduate examination system, postgraduate study grants; external assessment of readers or professors, call duty and clinical duty and hazard allowance and excess workload allowance.

SCANDAL: ASUP OFFICIALS BEATEN BY FED POLY OKO STAFF

Anambra state -- All academic and non-academic activities at the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, were ceased by Joint Action Committee of Trade Unions (JACTU). It was also recommended by the JACTU to remove the two aides of the rector, Prof Godwin Onu.

The punitive sanctions are imposed following a nasty incident during which the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Oko chapter, officials were assaulted by people from the office of the rector of the educational institution.
In a letter to the rector, Prof. Onu, JACTU declared it would withdraw from further official engagements with the management until the issues are resolved.

The letter read, in part, "Meeting of the Joint Action of Trade Unions (ASUP, NASU, SSANIP) took place on Tuesday, October 22, 2013, as a result of a report on assault and attack on ASUP by officers attached to your office Mr Amobi Chiamogu and Barr Stanley Okafor, during ASUP emergency congress held on Monday, October 21, 2013.

"Mr Amobi Chiamogu began attack on ASUP officials, destroying official documents of the union in the process, as well as inflicting body injuries to General-Secretary, Lady Barr Ogugua Ochuba. He later rained punches on one Kossy Ebunilo, an academic staff in the meeting. The legal Adviser, Br Stanley Okafor lumbered into the meeting with a stick and eventually caused a commotion.

"Reports indicate that a yet to be confirmed accomplices aided the duo in the act of infamy. The meeting reviewed the situation and concludes the development is strange to an academic environment and public service rules.

"Regrettably, the two officers who assaulted and caused bodily injuries to an officer and members of ASUP are key officers attached to your office. How can such highly placed officers of Rectory Unit throw decorum to the winds? Indeed, the actions are so atrocious that JACTU is worried that these men were sponsored to engage in such heinous acts. Ironically, one of the officers, the legal adviser, Mr Stanley Okafor, is not a member of ASUP. What then brought him to a meeting of intellectuals?

"JACTU condemns the action of the duo in entirety and regrets that the actions are unprecedented in the institution. The actions smack of high level of indiscipline and gangsterism. The development is appalling, shocking and unacceptable. Other personal assistants and legal advisers have successfully operated in the institution without abusing powers or causing a breach a breach of peace.

"In view of the forgoing, management appears to weigh poorly on Labour relations measurement scale. Consequently, JACTU hereby withdraws herself from further official engagements with management until the issues are resolved.

"Regrettably, the victims of the duo are very senior officers of the Polytechnic.

"JACTU, therefore, demands immediate removal of these officers from office. The action is deplorable and JACTU demands that appropriate punitive sanctions be meted to these people. JACTU also demands unreserved public apology by both management and the concerned officers.

"Generally, in view of the unguarded utterances of threats to life by the duo, JACTU is compelled to believe that staff and unions now operate in an atmosphere of fear. That is dreadful enough in an academic environment and this is unacceptable," the letter ended.

Strike: FG Using Propaganda To Intimidate Us –ASUU

 5  0

Striking members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have accused the Federal Government of using orchestrated propaganda to compel their union to end the current industrial action.

The leadership of the union made the allegation on Sunday in Abuja, where it also reiterated that its indefinite strike started on July 2, still stands, irrespective of the move by government to discredit their union.

ASUU distanced itself from a purported meeting at the State House, Abuja, with Vice President Namadi Sambo, where it was claimed that government further shifted grounds on the demands of the union.

Last week, an online news medium had reported that there was an appreciable progress in the ongoing negotiations between ASUU and the Vice President, particularly on the controversial earned allowances for the striking lecturers.

In the report, government was alleged to have further shifted ground on the demands made by the union, by agreeing to add N10 billion to the N30 billion initially provided for the settlement of earned allowances, making it N40 billion.

It was also reported that government had shored up the N100 billion meant for infrastructure to N150 billion with a pledge to periodically inject more funds into the system in line with the Needs Implementation Committee chaired by Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswan.

Chairman of ASUU, University of Abuja chapter, Clement Chup, however, told our reporter that there was such meeting.

“In fact, I read the mischievous report online myself, but I am telling you authoritatively that there was no such meeting.

“Government is only trying to use propaganda and cheap blackmail to make us call off this strike, but it will not work.

“Our strike is still very much on course, in fact ASUU will soon release a position paper on these developments, we are used to this kind of blackmail from government,” Chup said.

Only recently, government began the implementation of no work, no pay policy against the striking lecturers.

ASUU’s counterpart in the technical education sector, Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), also resumed their earlier suspended strike last week.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Ambrose Alli University chapter of ASUU, Fred Esumeh, has said the union still enjoys public sympathy.

He attributed the strike to failed leadership on the part of government, saying over 53 letters urging government to implement the 2009 agreement were transmitted prior to the strike.

“As I keep saying, this strike is a product of failed leadership on the part of government; this is because we had series of dialogue to reach an agreement.

“An agreement reached since 2009 that has not been implemented up till now, obviously it is a product of failed leadership, before this time that we commenced strike, there have been over 53 letters, not to talk of several meetings with House and Senate committees on education to intervene.

“I do not think ASUU is loosing public sympathy, because what we see in our electronic media and perhaps few print media is sponsored protest.

“Like the one organised by the market women, that one is laughable, you could see that it is government sponsored.

“Then of course the guy that parades himself as NANS President, Yinka Gbadebo, a diploma student in OAU, who was rusticated from Ekiti State University.

“A diploma student cannot even contest to be an SUG president and to be a NANS president, you must be from SUG presidents all over the federation, so we know these people are sponsored by government,” Esumeh said.

Also from Ado-Ekiti came report that ASUU is insisting that the no-work-no-pay rule by the Federal Government against its members would not deter it from fighting the ongoing battle to a logical conclusion.

The union said no amount of pressure will dissuade it from ensuring that government implements the agreements.

This was contained in a statement in Ado Ekiti on Sunday by ASUU, Ilorin Zone, and signed by its Coordinator, Ayan Adeleke.

Reconsider Your Stand, Abdusalami; Babangida Tell ASUU/FG

Two former Military Head of State, General Abdulsami Abubakar and General Ibrahim Babangida has called on the Academic Staff Union Of Universities and the Federal government to reconsider their stand on the ongoing strike in order to avert total collapse of education in the countryThe duo spoke with journalists shortly after paying sallah visit to the state governor, Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu at his residence in Minna on Friday.

General Abubakar who spoke extensively on other nagging national issues including security, oil theft among others also called on all other unions already on strike or warming up to enter into dialogue with the relevant authorities to avoid the collapse of the nation’s economy.

General Abubakar said, “I believe that strike is a normal issue but i think we are overdoing it in this country because in other developed countries, strike is done within 24 hours aimed at drawing attention to their plight. Nigerians are already feeling the pinch of these strike actions and so government and these strikers should look at how these issues can be resolved immediately.”

The former Head of State said government should not have allowed the strike to linger on for so long and therefore called on it to look into their demands and address them accordingly regardless of its dwindling resources.

According to him, “Government should look into these various issues and demands and address them accordingly regardless of the dwindling resources of the country and similarly, the strikers should also look at the coffers of government and try to be reasonable in their demands.”

He noted that the various unions had made their points and therefore urged them to go back to work pointing out that if the strike continues, they might eventually lose the sympathy of the people.
General Babangida who also spoke in the same vein also called on the striking unions to sheath their swords in the interest of parents, students and other affected Nigerians.

Speaking on security, General Abubakar said it is the business of all Nigerians and should not be left in the hands of government and security agents alone and therefore called on the public to always pass on relevant informationregarding security to the authorities. Just as he also called on the security agencies to always protect sources of their information in order to give more room for more information.
General Abubakar those involved in the constant oil theft as unpatrotic and urged them to abandon the business in the interest of the economy of the nation.
“I look at the ongoing development as very sad and look at the people as very unpatrotic. To them, they think they are getting their share of the national cake by stealing whereas they are not. I want them to have a rethink and search their conscience and turn a new leaf so that we can have a peaceful and developing country”

He however allayed the fears of the ongoing problems facing the country saying, “God has joined us together and whether you break Nigeria into pieces, we will still remain joined by our umbilical cord because our umbilical cord is still there and we will continue to live together either as neighbours or as communities.”

ASUU Strike: NANS Barricades Niger Bridge For Hours

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Friday barricaded the Asaba axis of the Niger Bridge for more than two hours.

The action, which was jointly carried out by some university students and their polytechnic counterparts was in protest of the protracted strike by ASUU.
The aggrieved students blocked the bridge at about 1 p.m., which resulted to a traffic gridlock that stretched from the bridge to Okwe junction about five kilometres to Asaba town.

They also lamented the recent decisions of polytechnic lecturers under the auspices of ASUP to also embark on a similar strike, saying it would further cripple the education sector and send a wrong signal to the international community.
NANS National Public Relations Officer, Victor Ola-Ogun, said that the students were tired of the strike and appealed to ASUU to call it off.
He said that the students had embarked on the peaceful protest and taken it to Kano and “now they are in Zone B, that is Delta and the Anambra area of the country.’’

He said that if the lecturers refuse to call off the strike, the association would further move the protest to Zone C and D, comprising the middle Belt areas and South West of the country.

“We do not want a situation where our ladies will become prostitutes and the men armed robbers.
“We are always there to fight for the lecturers’ welfare and now that the Federal Government has decided to meet some of their demands, they should consider for our sake and go back to work,’’ Ola-Ogun said.

The students, which were drawn from different parts of the country, came in large number.
They will leave Delta to their various destinations on Saturday. (NAN)

APC SLAMS FG OVER PLOT TO BREAK ASUU

All Progressives Congress, APC, has accused the Federal Government of employing cheap and ludicrous strategy by using market women, religious leaders and students to put pressure on the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to call off its strike.
APC, in a statement in Lagos, yesterday, by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said that the strike, which is now in its fourth month, would have ended by now if the Federal Government had pursued its negotiations with ASUU with half the energy it had been using to rally various groups to protest against the union.

The party said: This infantile statement by the leader of the apparently misguided market women is the most irresponsible statement that anyone has made on the long-drawn ASUU strike, and it is a shame that the government is the instigator of such nonsense.

While indeed there are millions of jobless Nigerians, is it just any jobless Nigerian that can be a university teacher?

How does President Goodluck Jonathan, himself a former university teacher, feel about those apparently hired by his administration treating university teachers with so much disrespect?

ASUU REJECTS FG OFFERS; SAYS STRIKE MUST CONTINUE

Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, yesterday, rejected. the N130 billion the Federal Government disbursed into the university system, as part of efforts to persuade striking lecturers to call off the strike which began on July 2.

In a letter written to Head of National Economic Empowerment Development Strategy, NEEDs Assessment, and Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswan, by President of ASUU, Dr. Nasir Isa Fagge. The union insisted that based on the 2009 ASUU/FGN agreement and the January 2012 Memoranda of Understanding, MoU, signed by both parties, what was due for 2012 and 2013 was N500 billion, not N100 billion.

The letter read: ¡°We observe that the Committee is so far mentioning only N100 billion. If the implementation is to be related to the funding requirements in the 2009 ASUU/FGN agreement and the Jan 2012 MoU, what is due for 2012 and 2013 is N500 billion not N100 billion. Only the provision of this sum will meet the immediate needs of the universities.

¡°Our Union is very apprehensive of the manner in which the sources of the initial N100 billion to be used for the stimulation of the process are shrouded in secrecy. We believe that monies that already belong to the university system should not be blocked and recycled.

¡°This will not only be counterproductive but will brew even deeper crises in the system.

ASUU will not accept this.

¡°We are also concerned that a clear procedure or process for assessing the funds by the universities is yet to be defined. This concern is even more germane, given the statement of the Chairman of the Committee (during the last meeting on Monday, August 19, 2013) that the committee is taking some documents to the Due Process Office.

¡°We hasten to add that while due process must be followed, it is the sole responsibility of benefitting universities to respect all the provisions of the Procurement Act. The meaning of your Committee going to the Due Process Office is that it is the one that will be responsible for awarding contracts.

¡°We want to make it clear that this will never be acceptable to our union. We believe that monies meant to fund projects in universities should be sent to the universities, just as it is the practice with TETFund.¡±

The union condemned allocation of construction of 2,500 bed space hostel for N1billion, instead of 3,000 bed space for N1.2 billion.

¡°We are worried that instead of allocating N1.2 billion each to construct 3,000 bed space hostels to the 10 Category 1 universities, N1.0 billion for 2,500 bed space hostel to the 16 Category 2 universities, N500 million to construct 1,250 bed space hostels in the 12 Category 3 universities and N250 million each to construct 625 bed space hostels in the 13 Category 4 universities, the secretariat has changed that to constructing 1,400 bed space hostels in 25 universities at the cost of N2 billion each. We see no rationale in this.

¡°Expending N50 billion to construct 35,000 bed space hostels across 25 universities will be ridiculously scandalous since the same amount can be used to construct 125,000 bed space hostels across 51 universities. The standard cost of building a bed space ranges from N200,000.00 to a maximum of N400,000.00.

¡°This is even more worrisome, given the tangential suggestions made by the chairman that only monies for refurbishment will be sent to universities, while the rest will be handled centrally,¡± the union said.

The union also condemned the exclusion of 22 universities from the allocation for refurbishment of laboratories and libraries and three universities from the allocation for refurbishment of lecture theatres and lecture rooms.

According to ASUU, 24 universities are denied allocation for construction of libraries and laboratories, while two are denied allocation for construction of new lecture theatres and lecture rooms. 26 universities are denied allocation for construction of hostel.
