President Goodluck Jonathan has approved the re-appointment the Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Professor Godwin Onu for another four-year term.
This was even as the Chairman, Senate Committee on Education, Senator Uche Chukwumerije, yesterday, called for the upgrading of the polytechnic, to a Federal University of Science and Technology.
This call was contained in Chukuwmerije’s congratulatory message to Prof. Onu, on his reappointment. Chukwumerije described the polytechnic as one of the fastest growing tertiary institutions in the country.
Speaking with journalists at the conference hall of the institution, Mr. Obini Onuchukwu Obini the public relations officer, said the reappointment of the rector
followed his landmark achievement in the college since assuming office.
He said Onu’s administration had since inception embarked on aggressive developmental projects in the institution as well as manpower development for both students and staff.
In a similar message, former Vice President, Alex Ekwueme said that the reappointment of Onu was a step in the right direction and asked the rector to justify the trust by putting more efforts in his vision of transforming the polytechnic.
However, Obini assured that the reappointment of the Rector for another four year term would give room for a more aggressive development of the college community but would make sure that the age long clamour for the institution to be upgraded to a federal university was actualized.
Meanwhile, the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics, SSANIP, Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, and the Student Union Government, SUG, have commended President Jonathan for the reappointment of the rector.
National President of the ASUP, Mr Chibuzor Asomugha while hailing Jonathan for the re-appointment expressed hope that Onu would justify the trust by consolidating on his earlier achievements.
Asomugha asked the rector not to rest on oars but continue to consolidate on his past achievements during his first tenure just as the Chairman of the SSANIP, George Okoye thanked God for his reappointment and expressed confidence that Onu would work harder to maintain the records already set.
